Festival of Lights at Rose Tree Park opens Dec. 5

UPPER PROVIDENCE — Delaware County Parks and Recreation is excited to present the 2024 Festival of Lights, open from 5 to 10 p.m. nightly, starting Thursday, Dec. 5 through Saturday, Jan. 5 at Rose Tree Park in Upper Providence Township.

This beloved annual tradition will kick off with a tree lighting ceremony at 5 p.m. on Dec. 5, featuring appearances by Delaware County Council and other officials, choral performances by the Springton Lake Middle School Select Choir, food trucks, and a special visit from Santa Claus. The community is invited to this free event to welcome the holiday season.

As night falls, Rose Tree Park transforms into a dazzling winter wonderland, with dozens of illuminated trees and vibrant light displays that keep visitors returning year after year. The Festival of Lights has been a cherished part of Delaware County’s holiday traditions for over four decades, making it an ideal occasion to celebrate the season with family and friends.

During the Festival of Lights, be sure to check out the Delco Fare and Flair Nights. Enjoy local food trucks, vendors, DJs, and entertainment on the opening night, as well as Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 7-8 and Dec. 14-15.

The Festival of Lights is a walk-through display, and visitors are welcome to bring their friendly, leashed dogs along for the experience. There is ample free parking available, including designated handicapped spaces.

Rose Tree Park is located at 1671 N. Providence Road. This year’s Festival of Lights is proudly sponsored by Visit Delco, TD Bank, and Sheet Metal Workers’ Local Union No. 19.

In addition to the Festival of Lights, American Legion Post 926 will host a children’s Christmas party from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, at its post hall, located at 3220 Concord Road, Aston Township. All children aged 12 and under are welcome to enjoy snacks, drinks, a visit with Santa, and a gift for each child. Registration is required for attendance, which can be done in person at the post’s canteen or via phone.

For adults, the post will also hold a bingo night with an ugly sweater contest on Saturday, Dec. 21, from 6 to 9 p.m. This fun-filled event will include 11 rounds of bingo with a holiday twist, and participants are encouraged to wear their ugliest holiday sweaters. Special holiday drinks will also be available. Please note that participants must be 21 or older to attend.

On Saturday, Dec. 14, Media Rec, Delco EDC, and Visit Delco will present Photos and Cocoa with the Clauses from 10 a.m. to noon at the Media Community Center, located at 301 N. Jackson St., Media. Everyone is invited to visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus, take photos, decorate cookies, enjoy hot cocoa, and make holiday cards for local seniors. While the event is free, registration is required in advance.

Christ Church in Ridley Park, at 104 Nevin St., will host a cookie walk and luncheon at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8. Attendees can enjoy a delicious lunch of soups, chili, and stews, followed by a cookie walk for $10 per box, with all proceeds benefiting the church’s outreach committee. Those who can are encouraged to contribute cookies or a dish for the luncheon.

Woodlyn Baptist Church at 1125 MacDade Blvd. will hold a Christmas dessert concert at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15. The concert, titled Journey of Promises, will feature the church choir and the Bible Adventure Club children. Afterward, guests are invited to enjoy a holiday dessert buffet.

The annual Christmas Eve Service at Woodlyn Baptist Church is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 24, where everyone is welcome to celebrate with Christmas carols and special music.

Saint Anastasia’s Festival of Lessons and Carols will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 19, at St. Anastasia Church, located at 3301 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square. This free community event will feature talented musicians and poignant readings that recount the story of Christ’s birth, concluding with a wine and cheese social.

As the holiday season approaches, it’s important to be mindful of fire safety, as December is often a peak time for home fires related to candles and decorations. The American Red Cross encourages families to use battery-operated candles when possible and to review their fire escape plans. For those using traditional candles, keep them out of reach of children and pets and never leave them unattended. Additionally, ensure all holiday lights are safe to use.

This festive season is a wonderful opportunity to gather loved ones and enjoy the spirit of the holidays while keeping safety in mind. Embrace the joy and warmth of community celebrations as you create cherished memories with family and friends.
