Giving Tattoos Day: Humane Society of Southern Arizona Brings Awareness to Spaying and Neutering Pets

TUCSON, Ariz. — In celebration of Giving Tuesday, the Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSA) is shining a spotlight on the importance of spaying and neutering pets through its special campaign “Giving Tattoos Day.”

In-Person Event on December 3rd:

Community members are invited to participate in HSSA’s Giving Tuesday events at two Tucson locations on December 3rd.

Tucson Hop Shop (3-8 p.m.)

Located at 3230 N. Dodge Blvd., the Tucson Hop Shop will host a dog-themed celebration featuring adoptable dogs, temporary tattoos, and tattoo specials from Humble and Grand Tattoo Co. A portion of sales during the event will be donated to HSSA.

JoJo’s Restaurant (5-9 p.m.)

Join the festivities at JoJo’s Restaurant, situated at 76 W. Washington St. in Downtown Tucson, for a cat-themed celebration. Attendees will learn about HSSA’s Community Cat services and their Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) efforts while enjoying live music. Patrons will also receive a tattoo with every donation, and JoJo’s will contribute 10% of their sales to support HSSA.

The “Giving Tattoos Day” campaign not only promotes awareness but also emphasizes the significance of the green tattoo pets get after undergoing spay/neuter surgeries.

Why Spaying and Neutering Matter

Spaying and neutering are essential for ensuring the health of pets and addressing the issue of overcrowded shelters. HSSA aims to raise awareness about these important procedures and encourages supporters to make donations. Anyone who donates any amount between now and December will receive a custom temporary tattoo as a token of appreciation.

In the previous year, HSSA’s veterinarians performed over 7,000 spay and neuter surgeries, which significantly helped in preventing unwanted litters and reducing the strain on shelters.

Goals for Giving Tattoos Day

This year, the Humane Society is striving to raise $50,000. This funding will cover the cost of a month’s worth of spay/neuter surgeries (approximately 500 procedures) or offer care for 55 shelter pets, with each pet averaging a care cost of $910.

Donations made during the Giving Tattoos Day will be tripled, thanks to a generous matching program. A special Donation Power Hour is being hosted from 5-6 p.m., sponsored by Pima Federal Credit Union, which has already kickstarted this hour with a donation of $2,500.

During this exciting hour, HSSA’s CEO, Dr. Kristin Barney, will personally apply a temporary tattoo for every donation received.

For those who wish to contribute, donations can be made easily online or by calling HSSA’s hotline.

Join the Humane Society of Southern Arizona this Giving Tuesday to help make a difference in the lives of pets and support the community in making a commitment to spaying and neutering.
