Biden Offers a Blueprint for US Support in Syria, Announces Airstrike
US President Joe Biden has described the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria as a “historic opportunity,” laying out a comprehensive plan for US support in the region. In his first detailed remarks since the regime’s downfall, which occurred amidst a swift rebel offensive, Biden spoke at the White House, emphasizing the importance of this moment for the Syrian people.
“It’s a moment of historic opportunity for the long-suffering people of Syria to build a better future for their proud country,” Biden stated, adding that it is also “a moment of risk and uncertainty.” As the world looks ahead, the United States is committed to collaborating with partners and stakeholders in Syria to help manage the associated risks and seize this opportunity.
Reports indicate that Biden has pledged to assist Syria’s neighboring countries during this transitional period and to ensure the safety of US personnel continuing their mission against ISIS. To reinforce this commitment, Biden plans to convene with regional leaders in the coming days, and US officials are set to be deployed to the area.
In line with these efforts, US forces recently conducted a series of airstrikes, targeting over 75 ISIS locations with the involvement of various Air Force assets, including B-52 bombers, F-15 fighter jets, and A-10 aircraft, as confirmed by US Central Command.
These developments come to light as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to assume office in just over six weeks, advocating for a hands-off approach to the conflict. In a statement shared on social media, Trump remarked on the situation, asserting that the fall of the Assad regime demonstrates the “weakened state” of Russia and Iran, the key allies of Assad.
Trump stated, “Assad is gone. He has fled his country. His protector, Russia, was not interested in protecting him any longer.” Reports indicate that Assad and his family have sought asylum in Moscow following their regime’s collapse.
With the Assad regime’s downfall marking an unexpectedly rapid end to his rule after 14 years of war—previously characterized by stagnation until recently—the future trajectory of Syria remains uncertain. The ongoing support and strategic involvement of the United States could play a critical role in shaping the region’s post-Assad landscape.
