Habitat for Humanity, Reliant, and Texas Tech Athletics Join Forces for MLK Day of Service

LUBBOCK, Texas – A day off for many turned into a day of service for those involved in a housing project in east Lubbock.

Bringing this project to life required a collective effort. Central to this initiative is Lubbock Habitat for Humanity, an organization dedicated to building homes and instilling hope for local residents.

Executive Director Christy Reeves highlighted the organization’s foundational values, stemming from the principles championed by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Lubbock Habitat for Humanity and Habitat International was founded in the ’70s to support racial equality,” Reeves stated. “Dr. King’s legacy and what he stood for are deeply significant to Habitat.”

Another pivotal contributor to this day of service was Reliant Energy, which generously donated $10,000 to support the project. Regional Manager Anna Delano shared her thoughts on this meaningful collaboration within the community. “This day honors Dr. King’s legacy and emphasizes the importance of community. It demonstrates how we can positively impact our surroundings,” Delano remarked. “For everyone to come together on a cold day like today speaks volumes about the heart of the Lubbock community.”

The manpower for the effort came from the Texas Tech football team, who actively participated in various projects to help turn ideas into reality. Quarterback Behren Morton and linebacker Bryce Ramirez have contributed on MLK build days for the past four years.

“It’s huge for us,” said Ramirez. “It’s a significant opportunity to express our gratitude for the support we receive from the Lubbock community. I genuinely love this time of year because we have the chance to give back.”

Even though it was a federal holiday and classes were not in session, the commitment to service persisted. “On behalf of Texas Tech football, this is the one day of the year we get to build homes for the community of Lubbock,” Morton expressed. “It’s truly a beneficial day for us.”

As the nation commemorates the influence of Martin Luther King Jr., those engaged in the work in east Lubbock hope their efforts reflect the ideals he embodied.

“It just symbolizes what MLK stood for,” Reeves concluded. “Unity, with people from various backgrounds coming together to do something meaningful for others and to serve.”
