Curran Sworn In As Cranford’s New Mayor

CRANFORD, NJ — Dr. Terrence Curran was officially sworn in as the mayor of Cranford during the reorganization meeting held on Saturday, Jan. 4.

During the meeting, Curran delivered a speech outlining his vision for Cranford by 2025. He began by acknowledging the excellence of the town’s Memorial Day Parade, noting, “The participation by our residents, community groups, and the township highlights the appreciation felt for our veterans in this town. This year, in partnership with VFW, the Cranford 86, and the Cranford Garden Club, we will renovate and redesign Memorial Park to honor our veterans in a manner befitting their service.”

Curran emphasized the importance of environmental improvements, stating, “We will continue to focus on improving the environment and keeping Cranford green with the efforts of the Cranford Shade Tree Commission, Environmental Commission, and the Green Team. Our goal is to plant 1,000 trees around Cranford while also completing projects such as a micro forest, rain gardens, and native pollinator gardens. Efforts will be made to find alternatives to chemical spraying for mosquito control, along with exploring renewable energy options for the township.”

Highlighting broader infrastructure efforts, he shared plans for the revitalization of the downtown streetscape, saying, “After 40 years, we will undertake a revitalization to create more gathering spaces and maintain our status as the envy of the state.” Curran also reiterated the ongoing pursuit of flood mitigation projects, explaining, “Planning from the last two years will allow us to start river dredging this year. Thanks to the hard work of our township administrator and Commissioner Kathleen Miller Prunty, we will see home buyouts and culvert expansion on West Holly Street. The High and Chestnut Streets Project will also advance critical stormwater improvements in a 50-acre area, while we continue our advocacy with the Army Corps of Engineers for a larger regional project.”

In terms of community resources, Curran announced exciting developments for the Public Library, stating, “We will see an expansion of the size of our Public Library Children’s Room and an increase in library hours. This has been a long-standing priority, which will culminate in a state-of-the-art children’s room that provides a modern, flexible space for learning, reading, and play.”

To ensure transparency and communication, he committed to providing timely and accurate information through official channels, including the township’s website, TV35, newsletters, and social media accounts.

Concluding his speech, Curran expressed his dedication to the community: “As Cranford’s mayor, I am here to serve, advocate, and work with you to build a Cranford that is brighter, stronger, and inclusive for all! There are challenges ahead, but united by our common purpose that is community, we will address them head-on and keep Cranford a wonderful place to live.”
