SUTTON — The Sutton girls’ basketball team faced a tough challenge as they were defeated on their home court by the Douglas Tigers on Tuesday, January 21, with a final score of 38-22.

Right from the start, Douglas (6-3 overall, 3-1 in league play) seized the momentum. In less than a minute of play, they regained possession with a steal and promptly sank an open three-pointer to initiate the scoring. Not ten seconds later, the Tigers scored another triple. The Suzies (6-4 overall; 3-2 in league play) responded with a free throw at 5:32, but Douglas quickly retaliated with a backdoor cut leading to an easy basket, extending their lead to 8-1. Sutton managed to find the net for the first time with a single basket five minutes into the first quarter, closing the period with Douglas in control at 15-4.

The second quarter opened with Douglas exhibiting their scoring versatility, adding a tough layup through contact. However, the Suzies showed resilience. With 3:55 remaining in the half, a diving play for a loose ball led to an open fastbreak three-pointer for Sutton, narrowing the gap to 17-7. The Suzies managed to finish the quarter strong, hitting another three-pointer just before the buzzer, concluding the period with a marginal victory of 10-9. At halftime, the score stood at 20-10 in favor of Douglas.

After the break, Douglas came out with determination, quickly hitting a low-arcing three-pointer from the right wing followed by a fastbreak basket off an outlet pass. The Suzies executed a perfect give-and-go play from the post, resulting in an and-one opportunity with four minutes left. They fought hard to keep the game within reach as they entered the final quarter, trailing 28-17.

In the fourth quarter, Douglas maintained their lead, winning the period 10-5. They capped off the game with a buzzer-beater three-pointer, securing the victory with a final score of 38-22.

The Suzies will aim to bounce back in their next matchup against Nipmuc Regional High School on Friday, January 24, with a scheduled tipoff at 6:30 p.m.
