Columbus Toy Inventor’s Idea Becomes Thriving Business, Plans National Expansion

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A local toy inventor is transforming a simple idea into a flourishing business with a product designed to enhance children’s creativity and imagination while promoting learning.

Tim Holmes, the brain behind the product named Nurkl, developed a craft stick connector set that is compatible with various other building toys. What began in 2017 as a hobby with 3D-printed prototypes has evolved into a company with ambitions for national reach.

In reflecting on his journey, Holmes shared that he transitioned from a struggling entrepreneur to a potential partner with major retail chains. He emphasized that perseverance and innovation have been key in propelling his business forward. The relaunch of Nurkl earlier this year marked a significant turning point, even amidst serious challenges.

“As a father of five, navigating the current economic climate has been tough,” Holmes noted. “At one point, we faced the real possibility of being evicted due to falling two months behind on rent and other bills.”

Despite these adversities, Holmes held firm, fueled by his belief in Nurkl and the promise it holds for a brighter future for his family. “It is often at our lowest points that breakthrough moments occur,” he reflected, emphasizing the resilience needed to overcome hurdles.

A pivotal moment arrived when Holmes had the opportunity to present his product in Bentonville, Arkansas, to executives at Walmart. The meeting proved to be a game changer, as the company’s leaders were not only impressed with Nurkl but also inspired by Holmes’ story. Currently, he is collaborating with Walmart to stock the product in stores nationwide by next year. Additionally, he is preparing for distribution through Micro Center, confirming placement in all of the retailer’s 28 locations.

“These developments have come at a crucial time, as we have been facing financial struggles,” explained Holmes. “In fact, we didn’t have the funds to attend the meeting in Arkansas, but through unexpected support, we made the trip, and all costs were covered.”

The recent successes have set Holmes’ company on a promising trajectory for substantial growth. Aspiring to reach Fortune 500 status, Holmes is dedicated to scaling up manufacturing—an endeavor he estimates will require an investment of $1 million.

“The past few years have been filled with challenges, and there were moments when giving up seemed like the easier option. However, I have remained determined to support my family and grow our company in a way that will create a positive impact,” Holmes stated. “Now, we are beginning to see the fruits of that hard work, although we know there is still much to be accomplished.”

Currently, Nurkl is available in Columbus at the gift shop located at COSI. Shoppers can also purchase the toy directly from the Nurkl website.
