Kentucky Honors Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day with Flags at Half-Staff

Why are flags in Kentucky at half-staff today?

Flags across Kentucky are currently at half-staff as a mark of respect and remembrance. This action is in observance of National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, which commemorates the tragic events that occurred on December 7, 1941.

Governor Andy Beshear has directed that flags be lowered today to honor those who lost their lives during the attack on Pearl Harbor. In his remarks, he emphasized the importance of remembering the sacrifices made by those who served in defense of freedom. “Today, we remember those lost at Pearl Harbor 83 years ago,” he stated. “We owe a debt to all those who bravely answered the call to defend freedom. It’s our duty to support our military members and their families.”

On a national level, President Joe Biden has also acknowledged this significant day. A proclamation was issued, declaring that December 7, 2024, would be dedicated to honoring the 2,403 service members and civilians who lost their lives at the U.S. Naval Station Pearl Harbor. “Let us carry forward their mission of forging a better future for humankind—one of greater dignity, opportunity, and security for all,” he remarked.

This day serves as a solemn reminder of the events of December 7, 1941, when the attack on Pearl Harbor led the United States to formally enter World War II. The then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt famously described this date as “a day which will live in infamy.” The following day, December 8, he signed the Declaration of War against Japan, marking a pivotal moment in American history.

As we reflect on this day, it is an opportunity to honor the memories of those who fought and sacrificed their lives for their country and to express our ongoing support for military personnel and their families.
