World News | Sikh Nonprofit Serving Free Meals to LA Fire Victims | LatestLY
In a heartwarming act of kindness, a Sikh American nonprofit organization has stepped in to provide free meals and essential items to thousands affected by the catastrophic fire in Los Angeles and its neighboring areas. The initiative has been especially crucial for those whose lives have been turned upside down by the disaster.
A dedicated team of volunteers from “Let’s Share a Meal,” a nonprofit inspired by the teachings of Guru Nanak, is actively distributing essential goods to those who have lost their homes in the inferno. Onkar Singh, a representative from the organization, revealed that initial panic has transitioned to a sense of community support.
Singh noted, “Every day is getting better,” reflecting on how the community has gradually adjusted since the fire impacted their lives two weeks prior. He emphasized that victims not only need material assistance but also emotional reassurance during this tumultuous time.
“Our volunteers went and told them ‘We are with you. Your main thing is you are alive. The whole world is with you,'” Singh added, highlighting the importance of solidarity.
The organization is not only focusing on distributing meals but also providing essential commodities such as baby food and clothing for those affected by what has been described as one of the most devastating fires in Los Angeles history. Volunteers work tirelessly to deliver items that cater to the urgent needs of families.
“We deliver baby bikes, baby diapers, baby food. Mostly we work with baby formulas. We bring in pallets, popcorn, water, hand wipes, toothpaste, and toothbrushes. A lot of drinks, mixed soda, juice,” Singh explained. The team rotates between various shelters to ensure that all individuals in need receive assistance.
Singh mentioned that while the fire has impacted individuals from various socioeconomic backgrounds, it has disproportionately affected many less fortunate residents. In dense urban areas, many people are now searching for stable housing as they try to rebuild their lives after the tragedy.
Since its inception in New Jersey 12 years ago, “Let’s Share a Meal” has proudly served over one million meals across the United States, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to helping those in need during times of crisis.
