Sikh nonprofit serving free meals to LA fire victims
A Sikh American nonprofit organization has stepped up to provide free meals and essential items to thousands impacted by the devastating fire in Los Angeles and surrounding areas.
A dedicated team of volunteers has been actively distributing essential items to those whose homes were destroyed. Onkar Singh from “Let’s Share a Meal,” a nonprofit organization inspired by the teachings of Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh religion, emphasized the importance of both food and emotional support for the victims.
“Every day is getting better,” Singh noted. In the initial days following the tragedy, there was widespread panic among those affected. People whose homes were destroyed needed not just physical support but also reassurance that they were not alone in their struggle.
“Our volunteers went and told them, ‘We are with you. Your main thing is you are alive. The whole world is with you,'” Singh said, highlighting the organization’s commitment to uplifting spirits as well as providing aid.
In addition to meals, the nonprofit is supplying essential commodities such as baby food, clothing, and toiletries to the victims of one of the worst fires in the city’s history. Singh explained, “We deliver baby bikes, baby diapers, and baby food. Mostly, we work with baby formulas. We bring in pallets of popcorn, water, hand wipes, toothpaste, and toothbrushes. A lot of drinks, mixed soda, juice.”
The team of volunteers travels from shelter to shelter, ensuring that those in need receive the items laid out for them. Singh pointed out that while the fire affected many affluent individuals, it also had a significant impact on less privileged communities.
Some individuals are seeking shelter and basic assistance as they navigate the aftermath of the fire, further emphasizing the need for comprehensive support systems in place during such crises.
Since its establishment in New Jersey 12 years ago, “Let’s Share a Meal” has successfully served over one million meals across the United States, showcasing its dedication to helping those in need within various communities.
