US Addresses Concerns Related To ‘Irregular Migration’ With India: Rubio After High-Stake Bilateral Meeting With Jaishankar
Washington: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and newly-appointed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held their first bilateral meeting, which came shortly after Donald Trump returned to power. During the much-anticipated meeting, concerns related to “irregular migration” were a primary focus for the US side.
According to a statement released by the State Department, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the partnership between the United States and India.
India is in Sync with the US on Migration Issues
The Indian government is ready to collaborate with the Trump administration to identify and repatriate all its citizens living illegally in the United States. Sources have indicated that the two nations have identified approximately 18,000 Indian migrants who are residing in the US without legal documentation and could potentially return to India.

It is noteworthy that India, recognized for its large pool of IT professionals, accounts for a significant percentage of H-1B visas issued by the US. However, during the election campaign, Trump consistently emphasized a strong stance against illegal immigration.
Secretary Rubio also highlighted the Trump Administration’s interest in collaborating with India to enhance economic ties and address the issue of irregular migration, as mentioned in the State Department’s statement.
India’s Position on Skilled Migration
India has articulated that the movement of skilled professionals is a vital aspect of Indo-US relations that benefits both nations. This stance is particularly relevant amid ongoing discussions regarding H-1B visas, which have garnered support from Trump and his backing from prominent figures like Elon Musk.
Trump’s Stance on H-1B Visas
Trump has expressed his strong support for the H-1B visa program, which has faced opposition from some of his supporters. Meanwhile, Musk has pledged to advocate vigorously for the continuation of this program. In the most recent fiscal year ending September 30, 2023, India received around 78% of the 265,777 H-1B visas issued by the United States.
Broader Discussions Beyond Migration
In addition to migration issues, Jaishankar and Rubio discussed a wide array of topics, including regional matters and opportunities to enhance the US-India relationship. Key areas of focus included critical and emerging technologies, defense cooperation, energy, and the promotion of a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
